Caol Ila Distillers Edition Moscatel Finish 70cl 43°

Distillery : Caol Ila / Country : Scotland / Reference: : 21088

After a twelve years maturation in oak casks, such as the 12 Year-Old Classic Malt version, Caol Ila Distillers Edition has been finished for another 6 months in refining casks that previously contained Moscatel, a sweet Spanish wine.

Moscatel brings an exceptional complexity, subtlety and depth to Caol Ila. The smoke and iodine of this Islay malt are lifted with honey, grapes and jasmine notes.

Our Caol Ila Distillers Edition vintage vary, depending on the bottling years.

The qualities of this Single Malt have been long recognised by the discerning palates. Its name is to be pronounced “Caool-Ila” and means “Islay Strait” in Gaelic.

The distillery sits in a cove near Port Askaig, where playing seals are a common sight. The buildings host three wash stills and three spirit stills. The production reaches 3.6 million liters of alcohol a year. Behind the distillery, stands a beautiful hill covered with fuchsia, foxgloves and dog rose, up to the peaty loch on the top where the mineral and salty stream runs, as it passed through limestone. Built in 1846 and rebuilt in 1879, the distillery has experienced a complete makeover in the 1970’s.

Reminiscent of smoky malted barley, Caol Ila is also maritime, vegetal, oily and peaty. The latest official releases are extremely characterful, with an intense peaty and smoky character with an amazing bittersweet balance. The unique character of Caol Ila ranks the distillery in the Classic Malts Selection. Created more than 20 years ago, this selection recognises Single Malts crafted in the tradition of iconic distilleries, and offers the most impressive whisky styles Scotland has to offer.

Colour: brown gold.

Nose: rich and complex. A pleasant liquor of exotic fruits and ripe fruits underlines the maturation in Moscatel wine casks. Softens for a while the phenolic, peaty, camphoric and iodized character. Nevertheless, pepper, cloves and ashes undoubtlely sign the Caol Ila style.

Palate: round and mellow. Bursting with fruits and peat, as the nose predicted. A sweetened note in the malted barley accounts for an exquisite taste sensation, such the marriage is subtle, successful, and well-matched with the 'base'.

Finish: long, intense, very smoky, with delicous aniseed and sweet and sour flavours. Lily, Iris, Lavender and Tuberose are the flowers composing the final bouquet.
