Powers: The Legacy of Irish Pot Still Whiskey

The Powers brand is a cornerstone of Irish whiskey, renowned for its bold character and rich flavors. Founded by James Power, the distillery quickly gained success, leading to its relocation to John’s Lane a few years later. Under the leadership of John Power, the founder’s son, the brand flourished with a clear vision: to produce high-quality Irish Pot Still whiskeys with depth and complexity.

Powers made history as one of the first distilleries to bottle its own whiskey, ensuring superior quality. The iconic Gold Label quickly gained worldwide recognition, solidifying Powers as a true whiskey empire. In honor of his contributions to Dublin’s growth, John Power was knighted and later became Mayor of the city.

In 1966, a historic merger between John Power & Son, John Jameson & Son, and Cork Distillers Company led to the formation of Irish Distillers Ltd. This unification resulted in the closure of older distilleries, consolidating production at Midleton, where a state-of-the-art distillery was built in 1975.

Today, the Midleton Distillery stands as one of the world’s most advanced whiskey-making facilities, boasting an impressive annual production capacity of 19 million liters of alcohol. The original distillery has been transformed into a museum, now a top tourist attraction in Cork. With 13 copper pot stills, Midleton crafts a diverse range of Irish whiskeys, blending tradition with innovation.
