Islay page 3
Islay stands at the south-west of Scotland, next to the Isle of Jura. Islay is flat with a peated soil, battered by salty Atlantic winds. Islay Single Malts are known to be the most smoked and peated whiskies, with malt intensity varying from the North to the South of the island. The South produces intense malts (Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Port Ellen) and the North develops softer malts (Caol Ila, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabbain). A thing to know for seafarers: located between Jura and Scarba islands, north of Islay, Corryvreckan is the world third biggest whirlpool, or “maelstrom”.
