Caroni, the legendary distillery in Trinidad that closed in 2002, has left its mark on the history of rum with its powerful, rare and now cult “heavy rums”.

Founded in 1918 in the heart of Trinidad and Tobago, the Caroni distillery has long been a flagship of local rum production. With its own sugar mill and supply of molasses, it developed an instantly recognisable style: dense, powerful rums with notes of molasses, spices and sometimes tar or rubber, which earned it a reputation as an inimitable “heavy rum”.

The distillery closed its doors in 2002, leaving behind limited stocks of casks. These casks, which were bought up and then bottled in very limited quantities, have now become sought-after collector’s items among connoisseurs and enthusiasts worldwide. Caroni is no more, but its legacy lives on through these rare bottles, where every sip tells a part of the story of Trinidad and Tobago and Caribbean rum.
