Killaloe is a village on the west coast of Ireland, along the Wild Atlantic Way, where the rugged landscapes of Clare meet the Atlantic. It is here that Anne Behan founded McConnell Woollen Mills in 2000, with a singular ambition: to make Irish knitwear a contemporary artistic gesture, without turning its back on its roots.

A Designer, A Vision

Anne Behan grew up surrounded by women who knitted instinctively, generation after generation. This transmitted, natural, almost innate gesture became the guiding thread of her entire creative approach. A trained designer, she developed a philosophy she herself calls "Knitwear as Art", an art of the knit that weaves local history, literature, music and the Irish natural world into every collection.

Her creations are expressed through two complementary labels: McConnell, the main line for women and men, and Áine, Anne's Irish given name, for a more distinctive womenswear collection. Two names, one vision.

The Fisherman's Heritage, Reinvented

The McConnell collection draws its inspiration from the work clothes of Irish fishermen, those robust and functional garments that protected generations of men against the Atlantic. Traditional Aran sweaters, ribbed knits and textured stitches are reinterpreted in modern, refined silhouettes suited to everyday wear. Not nostalgia, not faithful reproduction: a conversation between past and present.

The Materials

McConnell uses exclusively 100% natural fibres, sourced from Ireland, Scotland and Italy depending on the collection. Quality begins in the yarn, before the first stitch is even cast. Every piece is hand-finished in the Killaloe workshop, with the care that a garment made to last truly deserves.

The Colours of the Coast

The McConnell palette is bold and unapologetic, drawn directly from the landscapes of the Irish Atlantic coast: the deep greens of the fields, the ever-changing greys of the sky, the intense blues of the ocean, the ochres of the rock. Colours with character, worn with a relaxed spirit and contemporary proportions.

International Recognition

McConnell is an award-winning brand, recognised for its export excellence across Europe, America and Japan. Some members of the team have worked with Anne Behan since the earliest years of the brand, a testament to a shared commitment to this singular creative project.
