12 Unmissable Gin-based Cocktails

With the heat, cocktails are the stars of the summer. Colorful and fruity, the cocktails are very trendy and are appreciated for their fresh side. The Comptoir Irlandais has selected the best gin cocktails to have fun while cooling off.

Cocktails can be made with different spirits like gin, whiskey, vodka or rum. In this article, we invite you to discover unmistakable recipes for making gin cocktails.

1. The inevitable Gin Tonic

Gin Tonic is a classic cocktail that was invented by British naval officers in the mid-18th century. They consumed their gin lengthened with tonic, which is rich in quinine, to fight among others, against malaria during their trips in the English colonies.

Ingredients:

- 4cl of Drumshambo Gunpowder gin

- 8cl of Franklin & Sons Tonic Water

Recipe:

1/ Put the gin in a glass tumbler (high glass) on some ice cubes. Complete with Tonic.

2/ Stir gently to keep the bubbles and the sparkling of this cocktail.

3/ For a beautiful presentation, put a slice of lemon in the glass.

4/ To make this cocktail for several people, simply multiply the quantities indicated in the original recipe by the number of desired glasses.

Gin Tonic

2. The historical Gin Fizz

This cocktail’s recipe and story are quite similar to the Gin Tonic’s ones. They have been invented by the British naval officers to fight against diseases during their travels. The lemon juice present in this cocktail, rich in vitamin C, is an effective remedy against scurvy or malaria and alcohol helps to keep this vitamin.


Ingredients:

- 4 cl of Edinburgh gin

- 8 cl of sparkling water

- 3 cl of lemon juice

- 1 cl cane sugar syrup

Recipe:
1/ Pour the gin, the lemon juice and the sugar syrup into a shaker half filled with ice cubes.

2/ Shake a few seconds and pour into a tumbler type glass (high glass) while holding the ice with a colander.

3/ Add last, very fresh sparkling water and mix gently.

Optional: you can add an egg white to froth the mixture without changing the taste.

Gin Fizz

3. The Dry Martini, a classic

The dry Martini is a classic cocktail that embodies the whole world of cocktails, combining elegance and refinement. In the original recipe, we put very little vermouth to reduce the strong taste of gin and then let its aroma release.

Ingredients:

- 5cl of Tanqueray Ten gin

- 1cl of dry Vermouth

Recipe:


This cocktail is prepared with a mixing glass and not a shaker to drink it as fresh and as dry as possible.

1/ Fill a mixing glass with half ice cubes.

2/ Add the gin and the vermouth, then mix quickly with the spoon to refresh the cocktail while avoiding to dilute it with the ice cubes.

3/ Then pour the mixture into a martini glass, filtering the ice cubes.

4/ Refresh the glass with crushed ice.

5/ For decoration, add a pitted green olive at the bottom of the glass or on a wooden pick.

Dry Martini

4. Gin & grapefruit cocktail

Ingredients:

- 5cl of gin Drumshanbo Gunpowder

- 20cl of Franklin & Sons Pink Grapefruit Tonic Water With Bergamot

- grapefruit slices

Recipe:

1/ Using a cocktail measuring cup, pour 5cl Gunpowder gin.

2/ Then add 20cl of grapefruit and bergamot tonic water.

3/ Mix everything with a cocktail mixing stick.

4/ For decoration, add slices of grapefruit.

For more freshness, add a few ice cubes to your glass.

5. The refreshing Cucumber lemonade

You cannot control the behaviour of wasps at a picnic but you can ensure you have a summer drink as azure in flavour as the summer evening is long. Cucumber Lemonade brims with naughty thoughts for summers yet to be.

This cocktail is to be tasted for all occasions: cocktails, evenings, dinners, relaxation at home, picnics, fiestas, aperitifs, digestive, summer refreshments ...

Ingredients:

- 5 cl Hendrick's Gin

- 2 cl Lemon Juice

- 2 cl Sugar Syrup

- Soda Water

Recipe:

1/ Combine all ingredients in a highball (long and narrow glass) filled with cubed ice.

2/ Lightly stir and serve.

3/ Garnish with 3 thinly sliced rounds of cucumber.

Cucumber Lemonade

6. The Orchard Collins

The orchard, that midnight idyll, remains a place of mystery. The Orchard Collins is the physical manifestation of this bucolic dream. More importantly, this cocktail tastes exceptionally good.

Ingredients:

- 5 cl The Botanist Gin

- 2.5 cl Lemon Juice

- 2.5 cl of cider

- Top with Ginger Beer

Recipe:

1/ Combine all ingredients in a highball (long and narrow glass) filled with cubed ice.

2/ Lightly stir and serve.

3/ Garnish with a thin slice of apple.

Orchard Collins

7. Negroni, the Italian cocktail

This gin cocktail was invented in Florence (Italy) in 1919.

Count Camillo Negroni used to go to the Café "Casoni", a favorite place of the aristocracy at that time, to consume an Americano.

However, Count Negroni liked to taste new cocktails and got bored of always drinking the same and decided to change. He asked the bartender to reinforce his favorite cocktail by using the same ingredients, but bypassing sparkling water and adding gin, which the count had discovered during his trips to London.

This cocktail knew a huge success very quickly, all the customers of Café "Casoni" wanted to taste this "Americano with gin". The bartender named him "Negroni" to honor his inventor. This cocktail has since gone around the world and has become one of the great international cocktails.

Ingredients:

- 3 cl Plymouth gin

- 3 cl Italian aperitif bitters (campari)

- 3 cl Sweet vermouth

- Orange

- Ice

Recipe:

1/ Pour the three liquid ingredients directly into the glass previously filled with ice.

2/ A "lowball glass" (small glass) and "old fashioned" (as in the picture above) type is ideal.

3/ For the taste and decoration add orange twist.

Negroni

8. Gin, strawberry & raspberry cocktail

Ingredients:

- 35 ml of Brockmans gin

- 275 ml of Franklin & Sons raspberry & strawberry soda

- blueberries

- slices of grapefruit

- strawberries

Recipe:

1/ Using a cocktail measuring cup, pour 35 ml of Brockmans gin.

2/ Then add 275 ml of Franklin & Sons strawberry & raspberry sparkling drink.

3/ Mix everything with a cocktail mixing stick.

4/ For decoration, add blueberries and a slice of grapefruit and some strawberries.

For more freshness, add a few ice cubes to your glass.

9. The Tom Collins

The term Collins refers to a category of cocktails of the Long Drinks family, which are prepared directly in the glass.

The base of the "Collins" is: lemon juice, sugar, sparkling water and an alcohol, which is gin for Tom Collins.

The Tom Collins cocktail was invented in New York by Vincent Collins in the summer of 1850 to better refresh the customers of his bar rather than with whiskey cocktails.

Ingredients:

- 2 cl of lemon juice

- 2 cl of cane sugar syrup

- 6 cl Monkey gin 47

- sparkling water

- slices of lemon

- 1 marasquin cherry

Recipe:

1/ Put a high glass in the freezer.

2/ Mix the gin, the lemon juice and the cane sugar syrup in a shaker. Fill with ice cubes and shake vigorously.

3/ Filter into the glass filled with ice cubes.

4/ For decoration, add a cherry and a few slices of lemon.

5/ Enjoy with a straw, mixing occasionally.

Tom Collins

10. The Generous Gin

The Generous Gin cocktail is a more seductive variant of the Gin Tonic cocktail. The berries of roses and basil brings freshness and generosity to the drink. This cocktail is ideal to share with two during a romantic evening, for a relaxing moment alone or with friends.

Ingredients:

- 4 cl of gin Generous

- 10 cl Franklin & Sons Tonic Water

- 2/3 fresh basil leaves

- 4 pink berries

- 4 Himalayan salt crystals (or pepper)

Recipe:

1/ Make the cocktail directly in the glass.

2/ Pour berries and basil leaves slightly crumpled then add ice, gin and tonic.

3/ Add Himalayan salt crystals with ice.

Tip: Replace the crystals with white pepper or ground black pepper

Generous Gin

11. The gin & ginger cocktail

The soft warmth of stem ginger and floral notes of blueberry combine beautifully with the unique botanical taste of Brockmans' gin.

This cocktail has a complex, yet refreshingly sensual taste.

Ingredients:

- 5 cl Etsu gin

- Ginger Ale

- Fresh Ginger & blueberries

Recipe:

1/ Pour 50 ml of Brockmans Gin into a high glass.

2/ Add a slither of fresh ginger and 2 blueberries.

3/ Add extra large ice cubes & top up the glass with ginger ale

Gin & Ginger

12. Cosmopolitan, the feminine cocktail

The most famous version of Cosmopolitan is the one with Vodka but it is also possible to make it with gin. Historically this cocktail is made with gin and not vodka.

A recipe called "Cosmopolitan" is published in the book "The Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars 1903-1933" of 1934, this recipe is the basis of gin.

It was in the 70s, that the cocktail with vodka became a must in the United States especially with women, because of its pink colour.

Ingredients:

- 3.5 cl of Brockmans Gin

- 1.5 cl of Cointreau

- 1.5 cl of fresh lime juice

- 3 cl of fresh cranberry juice

- Lime twist

Recipe:

1/ Add all the liquid ingredients and a handful of ice into a shaker.

2/ Shake and strain into a chilled stemmed glass.

3/ Serve with a lime twist.
