Southern Comfort is probably the oldest and most popular whisky liqueurs from the United States. The liqueur is made from rectified alcohol, fruit, spices and whisky aromas. In 1874, New Orleans, Martin Wilkes Heron, bartender at McCauley's Tavern, created this new bourbon-based drink.
Heron moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1889, after having patented his new brand, he began to sell bottles with the slogan "None Genuine But Mine" and "Two per Customer. No Gentleman would ask for more." Southern Comfort won the 1904 Universal Exposition gold medal in St. Louis, Missouri. The success of Heron never ceased to grow and before dying, in 1920, he gave his secret recipe to his right-hand man, Grant M. Peoples.
