Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2023 70cl 46°

Distillery : Kilchoman Machir Bay / Country : Scotland / Reference: : 25550

In almost 10 years, the release each spring of a new version of Kilchoman Loch Gorm has become a small event. Taking its name from the largest freshwater lake in Islay, located not far from the distillery, with its dark peat-coloured waters and abundant wildlife, Loch Gorm combines expressive peat at 50 ppm and the characteristic citrus notes from Kilchoman with the woody, fruity and rich influence of Sherry. Its profile is intense and balanced, on black fruits, leather and cocoa.

For the Loch Gorm 2023 edition, 22 casks were selected, 8 were distilled in 2013, 6 in 2014 and 8 in 2015. Each cask was chosen for its unique profile which, when combined with the other 21, creates a controlled balance, richly fruity and peaty.

Still pleasing and essential!

First distillery built on Islay, 125 years ago, Kilchoman has been built as a “farm-distillery” and grows its own barley.

About 100 tons are harvested and malted at the distillery, 30% of the distillery’s needs. The rest is supplied by the Port Ellen malt-house. It is also part of the 6 last distilleries operating with traditional malting processes. In 2009, Kilchoman crafted its first recognized Single Malt. Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries of Scotland with an annual production of about 100.000 liters.

Nose: intense and sweet. Notes of cocoa with a hint of leather, black cherry and light smoke.

Palate: fruity and smoky. First notes of dried fruits, notably roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate and stewed black fruits, which then give way to a slight smoke of ashy peat.

Finish: long and balanced. The peaty and fruity aromas are accompanied by a slight salinity typical of Islay.
