Octomore 17.2 is a Scottish Single Malt produced by Bruichladdich Distillery on the island of Islay. It belongs to the seventeenth Octomore series, an annual collection built around super heavily peated whiskies and detailed exploration of cask influence.
Like Octomore 17.1, this expression is made from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley. The malt is heavily peated to 81 ppm, creating a powerful smoky foundation while leaving room for the character of the spirit and the influence of the wood.
The defining feature of 17.2 is its unusual maturation. The whisky spent four years in second fill French oak casks that had previously held Californian red wine and then Bourbon. It was subsequently finished in first fill Port barriques. This distinctive combination brings an expressive layer of fruit and spice to the whisky.

Nose: Ripe red berries and jammy sweetness appear with raspberry, blackcurrant and stone fruit. Floral nuances, toasted oak, clove and anise combine with dry smoke reminiscent of glowing embers. Barley, leather, fresh linen, coconut and ginger bring freshness and depth.
Palate: A supple and viscous texture coats the palate with wine poached berries and spiced fruit. Strawberry, blackberry and cassis are joined by barley sugar and dark syrup. Peat gradually builds with peppery and earthy notes, balanced by lemon zest, lime oils and oak tannins.
Finish: A long lasting impression combines raisins, toasted oak and sweet malt before moving towards dry saline, maritime and gently charred notes. Persistent peat smoke remains with a touch of soft spice.
