In 1824, the Port Ellen distillery was built on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Purchased by John Ramsay in 1836, it was the first distillery to export its Single Malt to the United States.

At the cutting edge of technology, Port Ellen is the first distillery that used a spirit safe for distilling. The story of the distillery is complicated, and has alternate periods of closure and production from 1930 to &969. In 1973, it becomes in 1973 a malting house supplying all the island distilleries with smoky malted barley. In 1983, the distillery closes and the spirit production stops. Its salty, smoky spirit has become one of the most sought-after malt by collectors, investors and aficionados.

Color: waxed teak, well sparked.

Nose: fancy and discreat, generally dry, it opens on a delicatly smoky note, then is covered by suave and smoky notes. Smoke volutes demonstrates a scented character, with suave aromas drifting. A fresh note crosses these layers to compete with soft mint, criturses and a tipe winy. Then cocoa notes, a hint of vanilla and more smoke wood. With a little bit of water, the scent is first suave then delicious to finish with a fruity tone.

Palate: wonderfull with its natural energy, suave and drainging. Omnipresence smoke becomes heavier, following with spices and flavored herbs. Thinning makes it fresher and smoother, without changing the nice balance.

Finish: sustained, cooling and comlpex. Instantly sugary and tasty: candy apple, lemon zest, ripe red apple. Deep aromatical herbal notes and heavy smoky notes, that softens after a few drops of water.
