Distillery : Lagavulin / Country : Scotland / Reference: : 25206

Essential in the world of whisky, Lagavulin surprises with each of these bottlings. This Diageo Special Release 2022 limited edition is an exceptional Single Malt with power and peat.

Selected from the distillery's smokiest virgin oak barrels and reserves, Lagavulin 12 Years Old Special Release 2022 offers a swirl of spice and smoke with a deep sweetness. The creamy, oily start shines with sweet richness, before lemony citrus and sea salt add freshness and a burst of spice to the taste. In the mid-palate, the taste becomes more drying, its smoky intensity ever-increasing. Large waves of peat crown the long smoky-spicy finish. This Lagavulin soars to new heights of spicy smoke.

The legend evoked on the label of the bottle recalls the arrival of a royal phoenix which, after a spark from the sun set the earth ablaze, appeared from the ashes to feed the stills of Lagavulin, amplifying its intensity.

The distillery has been built in 1816 on the South-East coast of Islay, not far from the ruins of Dunyvaig castle, the old fortress of the Lord of the Isles. Lagavulin produces a Single Malt almost as legendary as the island where it was born.

Among all the Islay malts, renowned for their peaty and smoky character, Lagavulin stands out for its depth and complexity: powerful and intensely peaty, it is also rich and round, almost mellow in the mouth. It is this double personality that makes it possible to better understand the exceptional "strength cask" versions offered by the distillery. The unique character and quality of Lagavulin whiskies allows the distillery to be part of the Classic Malts Selection. Created more than 20 years ago, the latter combines Single Malts, from the know-how of emblematic distilleries, to offer you the essentials of the great terroirs of Scotland.

Made in the birthplace of distilling, this iconic Islay malt is intense and smoky, steeped in history and tradition for over two hundred years.

Appearance: gleaming, iridescent gold.

Body: medium.

Nose: dry, with an immediate powerful smokiness; much more so than is usual with Lagavulin, with charcoal and fragrant peat massively to the fore, backed by a clean fresh base-note that suggests sea air and mineral scents. Much reduced, aromatically, with even a little water, it remains essentially unaltered.

Palate: the smooth lightly oily texture shines with sweet richness; the taste is sweet to start, then takes off with a soaring lemony acidity and a sprinkling of sea salt to add freshness. Mid-palate, the fire dries the taste, which flies still higher now in its salty-smoky intensity. A dash of water rounds and sweetens, but it’s the smoke that dominates.

Finish: long, with great waves of peat-smoke, and new-fired heights of spiced and smoky intensity that last wonderfully in the aftertaste.
