44th edition of the Solitaire du Figaro Race review for David Kenefick
Marcus Hutchinson and Paul O'Riain, the fourth and youngest Irish skipper to complete this legendary race.
‘It was an incredible race. If you had told me last year that I would be at the finish line of the Solitaire, I don't think I would have believed you!’
With a treacherous river, uncertain weather conditions that varied from stage to stage, and numerous difficult areas, it was a tough learning curve for the rookies in this 44th Solitaire du Figaro. For David Kenefick, managing his sleep, a crucial element in this race against time, almost led to disaster. In fact, on the first leg, our skipper slept more than planned. ‘I didn't hear my alarm go off and when I woke up, night had fallen but I didn't have my lights on, I was on the wrong course and, worst of all, I was surrounded by fishing boats! Frankly, I was terrified.’
The young Irishman was very surprised to discover the difference between the fierce competition on the water and the great atmosphere among the skippers on the pontoons.
Third place in the Novice category allows David Kenefick to look to the future with enthusiasm, even if he qualifies his assessment: "I'm torn. Part of me is now hooked on this race, but another part is a little frustrated. I'm going to wait a few weeks to take stock and see what I thought of this experience. I'm not too upset. I thought I would enjoy it a little more, but it's been a difficult month.
