Marie-Galante, the island of 100 mills, land of sugar cane, is home to the Bielle distillery. Founded at the end of the 19th century on an old sugar refinery called "sucrotte", rum has been made there since 1910. Over the years and with different owners, the distillery has changed its manufacturing methods, always respecting the rural traditions which make its identity and that of the island: the fresh cane stalks, marked by the sunny climate of the West Indies, are cut by hand to extract the sugar cane, then transported most often in the traditional way, on a cart pulled by a beef. After distillation, the rum obtained will either be bottled as white rum or put in barrels to be aged.
The Bielle distillery produces around 300,000 litres of agricultural rum per year, making it the second largest distillery in Marie-Galante in terms of production. Its rums, which have won numerous awards over the years, are a real invitation to travel.
