Penderyn 20yo 2004 70cl 58.5°

Distillery : Penderyn / Country : Wales / Reference: : 26127

Penderyn 20 Years 2004 is a special bottling for lovers of Welsh single malts.
The 20 years of ageing gives it a depth and maturity uncommon in this distillery's production.
Bottled at 58.5°, it promises natural strength without chill filtration, preserving maximum flavor and texture. This version is exceptional, fully expressing the exotic, extroverted style of old Penderyn. There are also floral and herbaceous notes of remarkable freshness.

Penderyn is one of the only whisky distilleries in Wales, and is renowned for its Faraday stills, custom-designed to distill a purer, more delicate spirit, while retaining rich fruity aromas. The first Penderyn distillery opened in 2000, in the Brecon Beacons park. It originally featured two stills designed by David Faraday. In 2014, it added two traditional pot stills. In 2017 and 2023, Penderyn opens two new distilleries.

Established in 2000, Penderyn is the first Welsh distillery to resume whiskey production, as the last one closed its doors in 1903. Whisky produced in Whales is called Welsh whisky.

Produced in the village of the same name, located near Brecon Beacons National Park, Penderyn Single Malt has been richly matured and is available with various finishes. The whisky is mainly in Evan Williams bourbon casks, a nod to the Welsh distillers who founded the American distillery. Then, the whisky is either finished in Madeira wine casks, imparting toffee and honey flavours, Port wine casks, for the red fruit aromas, Sherry casks or ex-Islay malt casks for their peaty taste…

Distilled in Faraday stills, a three-storey copper still with long column connected to a higher column by a pipe system, the Penderyn distillate is collected at 92%. A couple of traditional Pot Stills has also been installed in the distillery in 2014.

For Giancarlo Bianchi, the distillery’s technical director, “a non-age whisky distilled in unique stills in Whales, a craft production involving everything up to the 150.00 hand labelled bottles: this is Welsh whisky.”

Nose: intense and rich. Vanilla and cashew dominate at first. Floral notes (lilac, lily of the valley) follow, followed by exotic (pineapple, banana) and herbaceous (green barley) aromas.

Palate: light and lively. Lemon and country flavors (dandelion) bring serenity. Hints of cardamom and infusion (green tea, lime blossom) add elegance. The finish is gourmand, with notes of puffed rice.

Finish: long and well-balanced. Flavors of lemon pie and zucchini fritters, with incredible finesse. Spices (cinnamon, clove) are gradually added, followed by vegetal notes (alfalfa, cut hay) and a touch of chocolate.
