Brugal, pioneer of rum aging in the Dominican Republic

The story of the Brugal distillery began in 1888 when Don Andres Brugal, a rum enthusiast from Spain, crossed the Atlantic, then aged 18, in search of a new adventure. He put his suitcases in the Caribbean, in the Dominican Republic, to create his own distillery there, feeling the rum market very buoyant.
He then worked to develop each stage of the creation of his rums on the island, from the cultivation of sugar cane, harvested from producers in the Dominican Republic in order to support the local economy, to bottling, in order to control the entire production process. He was then one of the first to carry out the aging of rum in the Dominican Republic and made it the expertise of his house. A know-how that has enabled the success of its rums, still perpetuated by the 5th generation, 130 years later.

The 5th generation of “Maestros Roneros”

Since 1888, 5 generations have passed on to transmit the know-how and passion of Don Andres Brugal. The second generation to succeed him has allowed the Brugal brand to shine internationally, the third has embarked on the exploration of all aspects of aging in American white oak barrels, as for the fourth still very present. in the cellars, she is dedicated to developing the brand and ensuring that the quality of the rums is maintained in the face of growing competition.
In 2011, the last generation saw the arrival of 3 new "Maestros Roneros", including Jassil Villanueva, the first female "Maestra Ronera" from Brugal and the Dominican Republic. She brings advanced skills related to the selection and aging in Sherry Oloroso barrels, supervises the production of rum and oversees aging in barrels.

The Brugal Foundation

Committed to following the entire production chain on Dominican soil, Brugal continues its local commitment by creating the eponymous foundation in 1988. Its objective is to contribute to the development and well-being of communities in the Dominican Republic by participating in particular in the infrastructure building. The foundation has thus enabled the city of Puerto Plata to have its first hospital, it has set up scholarships and provides continuous support for the island environment.
