The history of the T-shirt

The T-shirt first appeared in the 1910s, during the First World War. It all began with American soldiers in the US Navy. They wore woolen undershirts as part of their uniform. These were very hot, and the soldiers sweated a lot in them. They also took a long time to dry. French soldiers wore long-sleeved cotton underwear. They were very comfortable to wear and easy to wash. The Americans copied this French trend, adopting a short-sleeved, round-neck cotton top. This became the standard uniform.

At first, its use was purely functional. It was considered underwear, so it was unthinkable to simply walk around in a t-shirt. It was only in the 1930s, thanks to the influence of sport and cinema, that the t-shirt was finally accepted as a garment.

The t-shirt, a communication tool

In the 70s, the personalized T-shirt made its appearance. The cotton T-shirt, with its simple cut, was the perfect medium for personalization. It became a means of expression for all generations. Musical tastes, political aspirations, jokes, sexual orientation... There are also plenty of advertising messages. In fact, it's an excellent communication tool, and companies have understood this.

T-shirts today

Today, the T-shirt is an essential wardrobe staple. Brands have made the most of it, and all have their own range, either branded or blank. They come in a variety of cuts, colors and prints. It has become an essential piece for asserting and differentiating oneself. It's a versatile garment, suitable for all occasions.
