The origin of casks
Barrels were discovered by accident, as at the time they were only used to transport whisky, which was consumed unaged. But it was thanks to a forgotten and found cask that a spirit rich in aromas was discovered.
Rum casks
Rum casks can come from a variety of origins: the 600L Portuguese Port Pipe, the 500L rum Puncheon, the Bourbon barrel that contained rum in the Caribbean...
These casks are less traditional, and are rarely used by distilleries, as they are more complicated to master, and bring influences that are more difficult to match with whisky. They need to be handled with care.
Tasting advice
To fully appreciate your whisky, pour a small amount (between 1.5 and 3 centiliters) into a tasting glass. For the best tasting experience, make sure your whisky is at room temperature. If this isn't the case, opt for whisky stones, which lower the temperature of your drink from 20° to around 10° without diluting it with water.
