Rhum, Rum and Ron?
Traditional French rums
These rums are made from pure sugarcane juice. There's a real know-how here, which has emerged over the centuries, notably with the sugar crisis when the sugar factories went bankrupt. Homesteads took over with cane cultivation and distillation. They began to produce rum without going through the molasses stage. Agricultural rums have a more specific, drier taste than other rums.
Traditional English rums
English rums are spicy and full-bodied. Legend has it that the English only wanted drinks with a high alcohol content, so that the gunpowder would ignite even when spilled on ships.
Hispanic rons
Rons are made from molasses. Production methods are quite different. For example, they use the solera technique. These rums are particularly sweet and easier for beginners to appreciate.
Designations in the world of rum
IGP: Indication Géographique Protégée (Protected Geographical Indication). For example, IGP Guadeloupe guarantees a rum made in Guadeloupe.
AOC: Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, reserved exclusively for Martinique. This guarantees precise specifications, from the cultivation of sugar cane to validation by expert tasters.
