The history of Venezuelan Rum
In 1700, Spanish colonists began growing sugar cane in Venezuela. It was also around this time that rum distilleries were built to produce alcohol from this crop. By 1800-1900, rum production had risen sharply in line with the growing demand for rum on the international market. Production became increasingly high-quality, winning numerous awards.
Well-known distilleries such as Ron Santa Teresa, Ron Diplomatico, Ron Pampero, Ron Cacique... became world-famous brands. Despite the rise of Venezuelan rum, an economic crisis, as well as a shortage of raw materials and exploration worries, left distilleries reeling. But Venezuela has always focused on quality and innovation to keep its place in the market.
Rums with character
Venezuela's rums are made from clarified or unclarified sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The use of traditional methods is essential to the production of this rum, and the taste is strongly influenced by the country's climate. Variations in temperature and humidity modify the aromas and flavours of the sugar cane, and therefore the flavours of the rum.
Sweetness, roundness, notes of caramel, honey and vanilla are the primary characteristics of these rums. There are white rums, amber rums and old rums.
