Origin and meaning of Black Friday

For more than 50 years, in the United States, Black Friday happens on the last Friday of November, the day after "Thanksgiving". American businesses traditionally offer discounted deals because people are usually on extended weekends from Thursday to Sunday and can shop on this special Friday.

Taking place at the end of November, Black Friday is considered the kick-off of Christmas shopping.
