The Tomatin distillery is located on the eastern border of the Monadhliath Mountains, 315 above sea level.
The distillery was established officially in 1897 but as soon as the 15th century illegal distilling was taking place in Tomatin. The spirits were bought by cowherds bringing their cows from the highest mountain peaks to Tomatin. The distilling activities attracted many customers and transformed the calm and remote Tomatin into a vibrant village.
In 1985 only Tomatin Co Ltd was established as a distillery, securing a bright future for whisky distillation in the Monadhliath Mountains. Tomatin produces each year around 5 000 000 liters of whisky with its 12 stills, ranking Tomatin in the main distilleries of Scotland.
