Loose tea and how to store it

Loose tea leaks light and air. So forget about transparent tins, even if they're hidden away at the back of the cupboard, as they could still give away the taste of the tea. Opaque containers are ideal for tea and, if possible, airtight.

Metal tins are perfect for tea and make an excellent Christmas gift idea.

Shelf life

Tea doesn't have a set best-before date, but you can tell by a number of things. After a certain time, your tea will lose its intensity and no longer be as good as it was at the start, but without becoming dangerous to your health. What's more, the better your tea, the longer it will last.

It's also good to know that green tea doesn't last as long as black tea. The conditions in which you store it will have a major impact.

Is my tea still good?

It's up to you to find out, using your sense of sight and smell. Observe it, then smell it!

If you don't notice anything strange, if there's no sign of alteration (mould), if it's still the same colour and smells good, your tea is still good to drink !
