Afternoon tea

Legend has it that it was the Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russell, who introduced the tradition of afternoon tea in the 17th century. She was hungry between lunch and dinner and couldn't wait any longer. So she asked for tea and something to eat. She was so delighted that she wanted to share it with others. Initially, this break was called ‘low tea’ because it was poor in food, but it soon became richer and more filling. The tradition was established and democratised in the 19th century, thanks to Queen Victoria.

Which tea?

The choice of tea is crucial. Not just any tea is suitable for tea-time.  Two major brands stand out. Barry's Tea is its Gold Blend or Master Blend tea, and Bewley's brand. You can buy them in individual bags or loose, as you wish.

What does it consist of?

It is generally served between 4 and 6pm. What better accompaniment than chocolate or fruit biscuits and shortbread. You can also bake homemade scones and add some Follain marmalade.

Don't forget to add the essentials: a beautiful teapot or a small Ogo teaware for a solo tea-time. Next, you'll need your most beautiful mug, Dunoon has a beautiful collection.
