Decaffeinated tea
The tea plant, Camelia sinensis, contains caffeine, also known as theine. It's this molecule that gives us the stimulating effect we're all familiar with. Depending on the type of tea, it is more or less concentrated.
The caffeine in tea is different from that in coffee, providing a gentler stimulus. There's a reason for this. Tea contains an amino acid, L-theanine, which has a relaxing effect.
Why drink theine-free tea
Theine can have negative effects on the body:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Heart palpitations
- stomach pains
- Pregnant women should be careful about their caffeine intake
- As well as people suffering from heart or stomach disease
Low-theine teas
In addition to caffeine-free teas, there are also low-theine teas such as :
- Late-harvest teas, made from riper leaves
- bancha and karigane teas
- Smoked teas such as lapsang souchong black tea
