Mhoba American Oak 70cl 43°

Distillery : Mhoba / Country : South Africa / Reference: : 24482

The Mhoba rum, with a Jamaican "funky" spirit, is made from pure fresh Nkomazi cane juice which was cultivated at the Mhoba sugar estate in South Africa.

The distillates come from unique stills that Robert Greaves, the founder of the brand, made with his own hands. The rum is first aged in large glass carboys with pieces of American white oak that has been cut and charcoal-burnt at the distillery. It is then transferred from these “glass barrels” to ex-South African whisky barrels for a second aging that will highlight all of its gourmet and intense woodiness.

It is in the agricultural town of Malelane, in eastern South Africa and in the middle of the estate's sugar cane fields, that the Mhoba artisanal distillery has established. The distillery makes rums out of fresh cane juice from the Nkomazi canes, a local variety with particularly intense aromas, that grow not far from the distillery.

Robert Greaves, the creator of the distillery, designed everything with his own hands, from the fermentation tank to the pot still including the press. Produced from pure sugar cane juice, Mhoba rum is an agricultural rum and corresponds to what is called pure rum, the equivalent of a malt whisky.

Thanks to a long fermentation and an original aging process in demijohn, the rums from this South African distillery are expressive and complex. A great success.

Nose: we notice that ageing has completely tamed the characteristic solvent of the distillery. We therefore find a clean and straight cane juice, with a very interesting little vegetable bitterness. The wood is patinated with beeswax, some walnut dust squeezes out and spangles the cane, which is as thick as a large, ripe exotic fruit. Airing brings us small curls of wood-fired smoke, as well as roasted and caramelized notes. Pecans mingle with maple syrup, it is a typical delicacy of the American oak barrel that has taken hold.

Palate: once again, it is American oak that delivers all its potential. We are moving towards an "English style", made of wood, vanilla, coconut and tobacco. The lemon in cane juice takes on an orange peel look, and the concentration is very tasty.

Final: a little more spicy, especially peppery, the cane juice is comfortably installed.
