Raasay Chinkapin Unpeated Single Cask 70cl 61.9°

Distillery : Isle of Raasay / Country : Scotland / Reference: : 25609

Isle of Raasay invites us to discover with this unpeated Single Cask aged in Chinkapin barrels, one of the components of its classic Single Malt according to the Na Sia method.

The Na Sia method is used by the distillery to produce its Single Malt. This involves the use of three types of barrels for ageing: ex-Bordeaux wine, ex-Rye Whiskey and Chinkapin combined with two distillates: one peated and one unpeated.

This Single Cask Isle Of Raasay Chinkapin thus presents the character of ageing in Chinkapin barrels (yellow chestnut oak from the American white oak family).

The whisky reveals an intense nose that opens with notes of caramel, gingerbread, and prunes, supported by a rather well-integrated woodiness. In the mouth, the attack is supple. The caramel gives way to sweet spices, then to black fruits. The finish is warm and delicately spicy.

Isle of Raasay is a young distillery whose project started in 2013. Inspired by ancient Single Malts from the Hebrides archipelago in the United Kingdom, the aromatic profile of its whisky is lightly peaty, balanced with rich aromas of black fruits.

The first legal distillery on the Hebridean Isle of Raasay, Isle of Raasay sits off the west coast of Scotland, separated from the Isle of Skye by a short 25-minute ferry ride.

Co-founders Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day first met in 2013 and formed R&B Distillers with the common goal of building Scotland's first craft distiller.

An island and the heritage of Hebridean whisky

They chose the island of Raasay which ticked all the prerequisites to emphasize local production, provenance, and quality. Relying on the local population and the restoration of a magnificent historic building from the 19th century, the Borodale mansion, the distillery was born and officially launched its activity in 2017 with its first distillation.

Isle of Raasay has drawn inspiration from the whisky history of the Hebrides archipelago to craft an elegant and complex Single Malt, a result of the unique character of the island: remarkable geology, coastal landscape, unique water source and technology peak.

A unique method of ageing

The distillery uses the Na Sia method to produce its Single Malt. To simplify, Na Sia (which means six in Gaelic) is 3 types of barrels: ex-Bordeaux wine, ex-Rye Whiskey and Chinkapin (American oak) combined with two distillates: one peated, the other not. The whiskies are then assembled to produce the Single Malt Isle Of Raasay.

Nose: caramel, honey, oak, gingerbread, prunes, blackcurrant, baker's yeast.

Palate: supple attack, caramel, spices, black fruits, brown sugar.

Finish: warm on spices.
