Ardmore 13 Years Old Caroni Finish 2008 Antipodes Berry Bros & Rudd 70cl 57.2°

Distillery : Ardmore / Country : Scotland / Reference: : 25288

This superb Ardmore has been aged in a cask that previously held Trinidad & Tobago's signature rum, Caroni, and has managed to preserve this rum's characteristic fieriness and power without altering its nature.

It offers a complex and bewitching experience, with rich notes of pear and burnt wood.

Until 2002, Ardmore was one of the few Scottish distilleries to use coal as a heat source for its stills. The first and second distillation stills have an identical capacity of 15,000 litres each, which is quite rare.

The Antipodes' collection brings together remarkable spirits from around the world.

Berry Bros & Rudd is the oldest wine and spirits merchant still in activity: it was in 1698 that a widow named Bourne opened a delicatessen at number 3 of James's Street, in the heart of one of the most exclusive districts. from London. It very quickly seduced the aristocracy and in particular the British Crown, of which it would become the official supplier.

Under the leadership of George Berry, who took over the grocery store in 1810, the wine and spirits trade developed and became its main branch. A new partner, Hugh R. Rudd, entered in 1920 and joined the Berry family to launch the Cutty Stark in 1923, the very first blend to be completely unstained. This is the first major success for the brand with both names.

Today, Berry Bros & Rudd spreads its products all over the world and is considered one of the most famous bottlers, in particular thanks to the know-how of Doug Mclvor, the real "nose" of the brand, who selects the  homemade whiskies.

Colour: pale gold.

Nose: rich and powerful. Ardmore and Caroni engage in an intense fight, but the hydrocarbon notes of Trinidad rum end up taking over. Oily, smoky peat dominates, accompanied by fresh fruit, giving Ardmore the edge.

Palate: clean, racy. Abundantly fruity with notes of pineapple and mirabelle plum, more peaty than expected. A subtle touch of anise and menthol. The peat becomes more vegetal, while the finish brings a honeyed freshness and herbal infusions.

Finish: long, concentrated. An earthy and medicinal start evokes Mexican mezcal (agave brandy). Notes of barley sugar unfold, followed by a mixture of herbs, chimney smoke, almost chocolatey vanilla. The peat persists in the retro-olfaction and the empty glass, but a trace of bitumen recalls the universe of Caroni.
